SURGICAL SKILLS

General Urological surgery

Dr. Roy McGregor is fully trained in all aspects of lower urinary tract minimal invasive endoscopic surgery for bladder and prostate pathology as well as open inguino-scrotal urological surgery. Having worked in specialist centers and my technical expertise includes most urological sub-specialties such as paediatric, female incontinence surgery and reconstructive urology including buccal mucosal graft urethroplasty for urethral stricture disease and bladder reconstruction.

Endourology

I have a special interest in complex stone surgery including percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for which I perform the renal access with the patient in the supine and prone position, rigid and flexible ureteropyeloscopy employing the holmium laser to treat calculi and upper tract urothelial tumours. Day case holmium laser enucleation of the prostate is also a procedure I am competent at.

Oncology and Laparoscopy

Much of my exposure has also included major open and laparoscopic renal and pelvic oncological surgery, Laparoscopic procedures performed include laparoscopic radical prostate cancer surgery (I have the only series in the English speaking Caribbean), laparoscopic nephrectomy, laparoscopic adrenalectomy, laparoscopic pyeloplasty including laparoscopic donor nephrectomies.

Prostate cancer research

Dr. McGregor spent time at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and the Royal Free Hospital in London developing a highly sensitive test to detect the spread of prostate cancer. His thesis, ‘The molecular staging of prostate cancer’ earned him a Doctor of Medicine (MD(Res)) from the University of London and was subsequently published in the Journal of Oncology.

Dr McGregor speaks at numerous annual international medical conferences such as the American Urology Association, British Association of Urological Surgeons, Caribbean College of Surgeons, Jamaica Urological Society, and Caribbean Association of Endoscopic Surgeons. He has published extensively in peer review journals and wrote the urology chapter in the textbook ‘Surgical Talk Part 2’ used by final-year medical students worldwide.

Achivements

Dr. McGregor has introduced many different minimal invasive techniques to Jamaica performing the:

1) First Laparoscopic Stone Removal.

2) First Supine Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) – A minimal invasive kidney stone surgery using a new patient positioning technique only performed by 10% of urologists worldwide.

3) First laparoscopic removal of an adrenal tumor.

4) First laparoscopic removal of a pelvic kidney.

5) He was involved in the first series of Robotic prostate cancer surgeries at St Mary’s Hospital in London.

6) In 2011, he performed the first in a series of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy surgeries and has the only Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy Series in English speaking Caribbean. He is currently the only urologist performing this surgery in the English-speaking Caribbean. He has performed over a hundred of these surgeries.

7) First Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy.

8) He has one of the largest series of laser stone surgeries in the Caribbean.

9) First insertion of a male sling for male urinary incontinence.

10) First Gyrus TURP in Jamaica (state of the art machine that allows resection of very large prostates instead of having to do an open prostatectomy)

Dr. McGregor also has one of the largest series of laser stone surgeries in Jamaica.
