Advantages of
Minimal Invasive Surgery
Modern endoscopic, keyhole robotic / Cobotic techniques offer several potential benefits compared with traditional open surgery making it the standard of care in first world countries.
Keyhole surgery avoids the large abdominal incision required for many traditional open operations.
Keyhole surgery avoids the large abdominal incision required for many traditional open operations. This reduces the need for strong post operative pain medication.
Smaller incisions and precise dissection can reduce blood loss and the need for blood transfusion.
Smaller incisions and precise dissection can reduce blood loss and the need for blood transfusion.
Many patients can leave hospital sooner than after comparable open surgery.
Patients often regain mobility and resume normal activities sooner.
Laparoscopic and robotic techniques provide enhanced visualisation and access to delicate structures, particularly during complex pelvic and kidney surgery.
Important: As with all surgical procedures, minimally invasive surgery carries potential risks and is not suitable for every patient. The expected benefits, alternatives and possible complications are discussed during consultation.
Minimally Invasive
Urological Surgery
Endoscopic Surgery
A narrow instrument containing a camera and light is passed through the urethra (the tube through which urine leaves the body), allowing the surgeon to examine the prostate, bladder, ureters and kidneys without making a skin incision. Specialised instruments or a laser are used to remove obstructing tissue, break up stones, remove cancerous or benign tissue from the bladder or obstructing prostate tissue restoring the normal flow of urine.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Commonly called keyhole surgery, major operations are performed through a few small incisions in the abdomen rather than a large surgical cut. A high-definition magnifying camera and specialised thin instruments are introduced through tiny incisions. The image of the internal organs is projected onto a TV screen allowing the surgeon to perform delicate and complex operations without making a large incision.
Cobot Assisted
Laparoscopic Surgery
The camera (laparoscope) is attached to a mechanical arm, the Collaborative Robot (Cobot). This gives the surgeon control of the camera. Dr McGregor performed the first Cobot assisted surgery in Jamaica.

Robot Assisted
Laparoscopic Surgery
The surgeon operates from a console away from the patient, controlling the robotic instruments inside the patient. Robotic systems can provide three-dimensional magnified vision, wristed instrument movements and improved access to difficult-to-reach areas. The robot does not perform surgery independently. The surgeon remains in control of the instruments throughout the operation.

Patient Testimonials
"He is a caring committed Surgeon"
“Recently, I had to have a kidney removed. I did not want traditional open surgery because it involved more pain and a longer recovery time.
I decided that I wanted Laparoscopic Surgery and started looking around for a laparoscopic surgeon with nephrology experience. I heard about Dr. Roy McGregor.
I did not know him at all but I did my research and decided to see him. I went to see him and I knew immediately that he would be my choice to do the surgery.
He had a calming, reassuring way about him and put me completely at ease and his bedside manners were impeccable. I had the surgery and was at home in 2 days and back at work in 2 weeks.
I would recommend him as an excellent surgeon. He is caring committed surgeon who also does renal transplantation and other urological surgery.”
