HEMATURIA (BLOOD IN THE URINE)

Haematuria means blood in the urine. It may be visible or only detected on a dipstick or under the microscope. Causes range from infection and stones to prostate conditions and, less often, tumours of the urinary tract. Because serious causes must be excluded, evaluation typically includes history, urine tests, imaging of the kidneys and ureters, and cystoscopy to inspect the bladder lining.

Flexible and rigid cystoscopy allow the urologist to look inside the bladder through the urethra and, when needed, take samples or treat small findings at the same sitting.
