Laparoscopic Prostate Cancer Surgery

Laparoscopic Prostate Cancer Surgery

Laparoscopic prostate cancer surgery (laparoscopic radical prostatectomy) is a minimally invasive operation to remove the prostate and nearby tissue when cancer appears confined to the gland. Through several small abdominal incisions, the surgeon uses thin instruments and a camera that magnifies the view on a screen, rather than working through one large open cut.

It may suit men in good general health whose cancer is thought to be localised and who are considering surgery after discussion of stage, grade, overall health, and alternatives with their urologist. Suitability is individual; shared decision-making is essential.

Compared with traditional open surgery, a laparoscopic approach is often associated with less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to usual activities for many patients. Outcomes and recovery still vary from person to person. Robot-assisted (including cobot-assisted) laparoscopic surgery is a closely related option in which the surgeon guides the instruments with robotic precision. At Premium Urology, Dr Roy McGregor offers minimally invasive and robot-assisted laparoscopic prostate cancer surgery in Jamaica.

No Need For A Big Cut

With minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, Small, half-inch incisions are made in the abdominal wall through which plastic ports are placed that allows thin instrument’s and a magnifying telescope attached to a camera to magnify images inside the body onto a screen. There are many benefits to this type of surgery over open surgery, including less pain afterwards, quicker recovery, shorter hospital stays, lower risk of infection & deep vein thrombosis, smaller scars, and a sooner return to full activities.
